Anwer Mooraj writes in The Dawn regarding Dr. Khan being awarded the "Jinnah Award":

“Going down the memory lane”
By Anwer Mooraj

“…Akhtar Hameed Khan — the grand old man of Comilla and Orangi. It was a posthumous award and richly deserved. Had this writer been there he would have bowed his head in reverence. They don’t make people like Akhtar Hameed Khan any more.”

“For the ‘Jinnah Award’, the members of the society nominate an outstanding personality who has made an impact on the Pakistani society. Amongst the past recipients there are names of some exceptional people, writes Fahad Farouqui.

The Jinnah Society recently awarded Dr Ishrat Hussain and Dr Akhtar Hameed Khan (posthumous) with the ‘Jinnah Award’ to honour their accomplishments and services to the country. The ceremony was chaired by Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal and was attended by people from all walks of life…

The award ceremony began with a welcoming speech by Liaquat Merchant, the founder and president of Jinnah Society…

The moderator Batool Zakir Mahmood introduced the recipients of the award and spoke about their achievements.

Dr Akhtar Hameed Khan died in 1999. He was one of the greatest urban planners of this country; his Orangi Pilot project is testimony to his genius. His wife who came to receive the award talked about his simple life and kindness towards people.

During the East Pakistan days, Aktar Hameed Khan who was posted in Comilla, a backward area, organised people to improve their community. He encouraged them to build their own houses and schools. His project was so successful that an American university invited him to teach urban development in America…”
